Why model photos sell better

Customers want to see how something drapes, fits, and how big it is. A model photo shows that; a packshot does not.

What the research says

Baymard Institute tests product pages at scale with real shoppers. For clothing, bags, and accessories, people use model photos to judge fit, length, and size. Without a model photo, they have to rely on less useful images: they buy with less confidence and are more likely to drop off.

Size is also hard to judge without a reference point. An image that shows scale, such as a bag on someone's shoulder, removes that doubt.

What customers notice in a model photo

  • Fit and length: how a jacket drapes and where pants end.
  • Styling: what an item goes with.
  • Size: how big a bag or suitcase really is.

What our customers say

“Publishing our (model) photos immediately has a positive impact on our online conversion rates. Clothing sells better on a model.”
