The short answer: from tens of dollars to cents per photo
For years, a model photo for your webshop, also called an on-model photo, easily cost €10 to €35 per image once you added the photographer, model, studio, styling, and retouching. With AI, that drops to a few cents per photo because there is no longer a shoot day: the image is created from your existing packshot.
There are roughly three ways to do this. You organize a shoot yourself, hire an AI creator or AI agency to create the images for you, or generate the photos yourself in software such as Photopilot. The price per photo varies enormously between these options, but what you get in return varies too.
In this article, we compare the costs honestly, using typical market prices in the Netherlands for 2026. Even if you do not use Photopilot, the overview helps you assess a quote or budget.
How much does a traditional model shoot cost?
An e-commerce model shoot has several cost items: photographer, model, studio rental, styling, hair and makeup, and then retouching per image. For models, usage rights are often added as well, known as a buyout, depending on how long and where you use the images.
On a good day, an efficient studio shoots around 50 to 80 items with two or three images per item. When you include everything, that comes to roughly €30 to €100 per item, or €10 to €35 per photo. It is higher for smaller batches or complex styling.
The biggest hidden cost is time: collecting garments, styling them, waiting for retouching, and then manually linking everything to the right items in your webshop. Those hours rarely appear on the quote, but they do affect your turnaround time.
| Post | Typical price | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Photographer | €800 – €1,500 per day | Includes basic equipment |
| Model | €500 – €1,200 per day | Plus buyout for usage, depending on channel and term |
| Studio rental | €400 – €1,000 per day | Not needed with your own studio |
| Styling and hair/makeup | €350 – €800 per day | Often one person for both |
| Retouching | €3 – €12 per image | Cutout, color, fabrics, folds |
| Total per shoot day | €2,000 – €4,500 | Plus retouching per image |
How much does an AI creator or AI agency cost?
An AI creator is a freelancer or agency that uses image models to create campaign or model images for you. You provide packshots, a mood board, and a brief, and receive the images after a few rounds. For a campaign shoot, you can easily pay around €2,000.
That is cheaper than a real location shoot, but most of what you pay for is the surrounding process: explaining what you want, waiting, emailing feedback, and waiting again. The creator uses the same kind of image models that are also built into software like Photopilot.
For one special campaign, that can be a good fit. For your collection on the product detail page, the PDP, it is usually too expensive and too slow: you do not want to manage hundreds of items per season one by one over email.
How much does an AI model photo cost if you create it yourself?
In Photopilot, you choose a packshot, a fixed AI model, and a style, and you get a model photo back. A photo costs €0.05 to €0.21 in the queue and is often ready within an hour. The top end of that range is the Precision+ quality mode, for images where fabric and details need to be especially accurate.
You create your own AI model, with front, side, and back views, once for €1.37. You can create unlimited models and use the same face in all your shoots, with no buyout per use. For comparison: a royalty-free face can cost up to around €1,000 from some providers.
If you want to use an image at a large size, for example in a store, you can upscale it to 4K up to 9K. The result stays true to the original, nothing is invented, and you see the price before you click. With 9K, you can print an A2 poster at 300 dpi.

The three workflows side by side
The table below compares the options for model images on your product page. The shoot and creator amounts are indicative market prices; the Photopilot amounts are the prices you see in the app.
Note the difference between cost per photo and cost per selection. With AI, you can easily generate a few options and choose the best one; even then, the cost stays at a few cents per item.
| Costs | Model shoot | AI creator | Photopilot |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price per photo | €10 – €35 | Depends on the quote | €0.05 – €0.21 |
| Fixed costs | €2,000 – €4,500 per day | ± €2,000 per campaign shoot | Monthly plan from €500 |
| Model | Day fee plus buyout | Included or extra | €1.37 per custom AI model |
| Lead time | Weeks: planning, shooting, retouching | Days to a week | Often within an hour |
| With the right item | Link manually | Link manually | Automatic |
| Real fit | Yes | No, generated | Optional with Size Guarantee |
Example calculation: 100 products with 3 model photos
Say you have 100 new items and want three model photos per item, for a total of 300 images. With a traditional shoot, at 50 to 80 items per day, you would need about two shoot days. That costs €4,000 to €9,000, plus €900 to €3,600 for retouching: roughly €5,000 to €12,500 in total.
With Photopilot, you generate two options per image to be safe, so 600 photos. At €0.05 to €0.21 per photo, that is €30 to €126, plus €1.37 for your own AI model. Even with three or four options per image, you stay well under €300.
The monthly plan is added to that, starting at €500 per month. It also includes all standard edits, such as background, template, shadow, and color correction, as well as publishing to your webshop. So the plan is not just for the model photos.
- Model shoot: ± €5,000 – €12,500 for 300 images
- AI creator: ± €2,000 per campaign shoot; for a collection of 100 items, usually multiple assignments
- Photopilot: ± €30 – €126 in AI photos plus €1.37 for the model, on top of the monthly plan
Always calculate costs per live product, not per photo: with manual workflows, linking, checking, and publishing often takes more time than the photo itself.
When a real shoot or another option is smarter
AI is not always the best choice. If the fit needs to be exact, such as for dresses with a specific length, pants or custom-made items, you want a real shot as the basis. In Photopilot, this is called Fit Guarantee: you photograph your own garment once for real, and only the model is swapped. This can also be done fully with AI from a packshot, but then the fit is generated.
If you are building a brand around a familiar face or a recognizable photographer, or your campaign depends on a real location and a real moment, a real shoot is still the right choice. If you only have a handful of items per year, a one-off shoot or an AI creator can sometimes be simpler than a monthly plan.
Photopilot is especially useful if you regularly put new items online and want every item to look consistent, with the same Huismodel and the same crop.

How to create an AI model photo in Photopilot
You select one or more packshots, choose your fixed AI model and a style: studio, editorial, campaign, or street. The pose follows the view, a style preset, a reference image, or your own short instruction. Crop and margins are set per product group, so every photo fits with the rest of your webshop.
For campaigns, Iris, your AI creative director, helps choose scenes and poses for a complete shoot. You see each image next to the packshot, and for each brand or collection you decide whether it can go live automatically or needs a quick review first.
Approved images go directly to your webshop, such as Shopware, Shopify, or WooCommerce, and are immediately linked to the correct item and variant.
